Weighing All the Consequences

Hi 3A2 and 3E4,

Now that we are done with the causes and consequences of the Sri Lankan conflict, we will be moving to Northern Ireland next :)

But before that, please answer this question:

Among the three consequences of the Sri Lankan conflict, which is the most serious consequence? Explain why?

Cheers,
Mr Syed

For me , I think that the most serious consequences is the ' Economic Consequence ' .

The Massive Unemployment causes thousands of people lost their jobs due to the riots in July 1983 . Large number who lost their jobs are mainly Sinhalese who took part in vandalising , looting and burning their places of work .

Also , the Loss of investments from other countries dropped from 70 million in the year 1982 to 25 million in the year 1986 . In between the four years , the investments dropped 45 million as investors from other countries lack of confidence to invest in the country .

Lastly , there is also fall in the number of tourists . This decrease resulted in a loss of jobs and a fall in the country's income . In the year 1976 to 1981 , there is a increase in tourists arrivals . but from the year 1982 to 1986 , there is a decrease of tourists arrivals . this shows that the conflict in Sri Lanka has affected tourism in the country .

Thus , I think the most serious consequences is the ' Economic ' .

The most serious is the Economic consequence.

The Sri Lanka riots in 1983 caused thousands to lose their job due to Sinhalese burning and vandalizing of Tamil business. With the Tamil-owned businesses and factories destroyed, about 25,000 people lost their job and after the violence, a total of 150,000 jobs had been lost and 90% of the jobs belonged to the sinhalese.

Because of the conflict, there had been a loss of investment from foreign countries and foreign investments are needed in order for the economy of the country to grow. There was also a lack of confidence to invest in Sri Lanka and the economy of Sri Lanka dropped from 70 million in 1982 to 25 million in 1986.

Tourists arrivals start to decreased after the July 1983 riots and it resulted in a loss of jobs and a fall in earnings. With this, there were limited funds to develop amenities and facilities such as transport and housing.

Therefore, the most serious consequence that Sri Lanka has faced due to its violence and internal conflicts is the Economic.

ShI yUn,3A2:]

There are three consequences which were caused by the Sri Lankan conflict, namely the political conseqence, economic consequence as well as social consequence. All these consequence did affect the people and country in a negative way.In my opinion,i feel that the most serious consequence is none other than economic consequence.Following are my reasons:

To begin with, there were massive unemployment in the country. The Sri Lnakan riots in July 1983 caused thousands and thousands of factory workers, the self-employed and platation workers to be retrenched from their jobs. Therefore, this resulted in a large number of the Sinhalese who were jobless to take part in vandalising, looting and burning their worklplaces. Some even went to an extent to beat people up.Hence, all the parties suffered in the conflict.

Secondly, there was a great loss of investments from other countries. This was due to foreign investors were lack of confidence to invest on the country as they were afriad that their investments would go down to the drain if they invest in there. As foreign investments are needed for the economy of the country to grow,in times of instability, there would not be any investors.Hence, foreign investments in Sri Lnakan dropped from 70 million in 1982 to 25million in 1986.From here,we could see that there was a great sudden drop in the invesments.

Last, but not least, there was a fall in the number of tourist coming to Sri Lankan. As we know, tourism is one of Sri Lankan's major income earners,it was serioulsy affected due to the violence and the internal conflict, resulting in a great decline of tourists arrival in 1983 riots.Hence, the decreased resulted in a loss of jobs of the people and a fall in the monthly income. This in turn affected the economy adversely.Futhermore, there were limited funds to develope amenities anf facilities such as schools, hospitals, transport network etc..Tourist arrivals dropped from 400,000 in 1982 to 200,000 in 1986.Thus,with limited funds, the government could not develop the country well enough.

In conclusion,i feel that economic consequence did have the most impact on the contry as it not only did it affect the people but also almost the whole contry.Whereas for the other consequence,i fell that itdid not really had much impact on the people?

I felt that the economic consequence is the most serious amongst the other consequences.

because of the riots in july 1983,there were a massive umemployment of factory workers, self employed and plantation workers as they lost their jobs.

it also suffered a loss of investments from other countries, the country was unable to grow as foreign investments were needed...

apart from the unemployment and loss of investments,it also caused a fall in the number of tourist ,it was affected by the violenceand internal conflict.the decrease caused alot of people to lose their jobs and a fall in earnings, the decrease also affected the economy adversely.

therefore from all the above situation caused by the econimic consequence i say that it is the most serious one
