As promised, this week we will be moving on to the Northern Ireland conflict.

Once you have read the textbook on the background of the conflict, please provide details of how and why the relationship between the Catholics & Protestants was not cordial (friendly)?Cheers,
Mr Syed

The relationship between the catholics and protestants were not friendly because the the english landlords brought in protestant scottish and english settlers to increase the protestant population there.
As a result, the northern part of ireland became predominantly protestants.when catholic king james ascended the throne, the protestants became fearful as their land and power would be given back.king james tried to defeat them but failed and was then defeated by protetant king william in the battle of boyne in 1690.
For years the irish fought against the scottish without success ..
The catholic in the north continued to be treated unfairly by the protestant government and in 1949,the irish free state cut ties with britain and became the republic of ireland.

Armand 3a2,
Their relationship was not friendly because the English Landlords brought protestant Scottish to increase the number of protestants in Ireland. Most of the protestants settled in the northern region which is the Northern Ireland of today.
Most of the catholics were pushed out and the remaing farmers were outcasts and given less fertile land. Thus protestants have a higher population compared to the catholics. When King James II (catholic) ascended the throne, the protestants feared that they would be stripped off their power and land.
In 1960 king James tried to defeat the local protestants but was defeated by the protestant king, William of Orange in the battle of Boyne
King William of Orange implemented the penal laws to ensure the protestants will be in rule with laws such as, no voting rights, no buying land, unable to join the army, and unable to revive higher education. This added to the conflict between the catholics and the protestants.
In 1921, Ireland was splited into 2 states. northern Ireland and the Irish Free state. Later the Irish free state cut ties with britain and became the Republic of Ireland
