Issues of Racism & Racial Pride

Hi 3E4 & 3A2...

Hope you had a great break! Welcome back to a new semester :)

To start off our Social Studies lesson, I have screened the movie 'Freedom Writers' (based on a true story). This film deals with issues of racism and racial pride; a central theme which we will discuss in Chapter 4 :Conflicts in Multi-Ethnic Societies.

While reflecting on this movie, I want you to consider these few points:

1. Why is race so important for the students at Wilson High School?

2. What are some of the causes of the racial conflict in the school and how did this impact the students?

I wish to hear your comments. Please post them by clicking on comments link at the bottom of this post.

Remember to write your name and class so that I can monitor your participation :)

Mr Syed

Race is important to them because they had been through the pain of losing their family members . They've seen people of the other race kill , beat , torture or nab their family member or friends , that is why they hate people from other race and this problem / issue becomes important .

The causes of this conflict is because of what they went through when they were young and this explains why the students had guarded against people who are different , people from other races :D

The movie is great and touching!, i watched it at youtube. I cried in the end, hahaha! i cry easily when i see this kind of movies. I even borrowed the Freedom Writers Diary at school and it's really interesting!.
I guess racial pride or their race is a part of their identity or who they are. Without their identity, they are noone. So in order to protect their own identity or where they belong, they have to fight between other races to survive or that's what they think, i think. But they did not realise that despite colours or races, they are 'peanuts'(read it from the book), they are different on the outside like dirty or rough but have a smooth white surface on the inside.Or another similarity, they are human beings.

i think that the racial harmony is very important because it's what unite us all, without it a country would be nothing. But i guess that there would never be peace because, everyone has a different opinion.

HI mr.syed , thanks for the show, i really enjoyed it. My view on this movie is that I think raical discrimination is a very serious thing and that if you don't know how to express yourself properly you might accidently offend the other races.

i feel that race is important in a country because we grt to know the different types of cultures .thus we can try to cultivate these cultures so as to make the country a prosperous and also a harmonious one.

Race is important in Wilson high because that if you are the only one of your own race, no one will protect and help you. Like what ms Erin Gruwell had as Ben to sit at the back, Ben was scared and please Ms Gruwell not to put him at the back. One of his friend said that if he go to the back...he will "die"

The cause of the racial conflict is because that when they were young, they seen how other race took their love ones away and some even been beaten by the other race(like Eva). This tell them that no one can be trusted, only their own race will help them

In the movie, a girl said"white people can do wat they like anytime/any day".She said that because when she was little, her father was being caught by white people. Thats why she hate them!I think race is important because there is a lot of suffering of family members, friends & people u know!I think u will feel sad if you know there is a lot of suffering of family members, friends & people u know.

I did not watch the first part of the show...but when i watch the second part...i think it is cool and sad and exiting...the teachers really have a big part to the class...it hard to get this kind of teachers...they need racial harmony to decrease all the fighting...in the end of the show...racial harmony is really in the class...i hope there will be more of this show...

In my opinon, the show that we have waTched, which is the freedom writters , i feel so touched at the ending of the story. i learned that we should not be bias, fighting, and just protecting in our races. We should understand their different races & in order not to be fighting all way long, we should try to work togather & understand them. Therefore, we should not be racist. Even though it takes time to let them be togather and think back of what they had done. To me, i feel glad that in singapore we do have a multi-ethnic group. It will bring us peace & happiness if we were togather just like the ending of the movie. I hope in other countries will not have these situation anymore. Just peace, no war! :D Freedom writters! yeah!

Freedom Writers was a very good movie. It was touching, inspiring and definitely a must-watch.The Movie shows us that it is very important for Races to be united, and not fighting each other and at the worst, killing each other. It shows that the Whites, could do everything they can to the Blacks and not feel sad or anything about it.The Jews was also 'tortured' by the Nazis and they could not do a lot of things like going to movies.

Racial Harmony is important and it can impact a lot of people's life if racial harmony is practicise. It sure is important to for races to unite and be one!

In my opinion, race is important to Wilson High School students as that seemed to be the only thing that they are proud of. Their race means everything to them. It represents which tribe they are from and it symbolises their identity. The students in Wilson High identify each other through their races. They wouldn't mind to sacrifice anything just to protect/defend their own race.

The racial conflicts in the school is caused by the different perspectives of the different races. Each of the tribes thinks that they are the best and they were the ones that arrived first in America. Since everyone thinks that way, they began to have a misunderstanding and fight for their rights.

The students live in fear everyday. They are afraid of being jumped at. They seemed to be strong on the outside but noone actually know how the really felt on the inside.

Race is important to them as it make them feel important and make them belong to the country. As in America, only the 'white' have their say and the other races don't belong to the country.

For example,Eva,she was angry as the white took her father even though they know he is innocent.Being in her race, she can rebel with the other that share the same anger with her.

But soon she know that even the white feel outkast also. Hence, that's why race is so important to them.

Race is important as the students hate each other at first, And they would not want to come to school to see each other and that leads to lack of study for them as they missed a lot of lessons. Some of the causes are their fear experience that turn their fear into revenge and so disliked any other race other then them..

This is the first time i am so intrested in a movie/show , infact it was a great movie . i enjoy it alot , i even wanted to experience wadd they had experience . As although we had watched the movie and we felt sad and scare for them , we would never really know how they feel , we can only put ourself in their shoe , we could never feel the fear in them when they walked out of their house and fear being shot dead in the middle of the road , the loss face of their's when they saw their parent being dragged out of the house and they can't do anything about it , their frens being shot by other races and they wonder they are next .

racial pride is part of who they are. the conflict started because of what the students went through since young and hence they started to guard against people from other races in order to protect their own identity or where they belong.

i think racial harmony is very important because it helps to unite a country. without it, a country would have no peace.

I really love the 'FREEDOM WRITERS'so amazing ,meaningful & touching..
I think that race is important to them because many people from their differnt races had actually harm their very own family members or friends. Therefore hatred will start to occur between the different races.

so,in order to help their own race & colour, conflicts will start to occur.I think that they should treat everyone equal & not ignore or make friends just of their own race & colour because not everyone is the same.

Thank you ;)

i find that race is very important to them. They lost their family because of the whites which they call it. Slowly, this led them to a hatred towards the white and other races, and as time goes by, conflict start to happen. Killing, fightings and escaping had become part of their life, and somehow they dislike it.

However, i think that the teacher done a great job by using different kind of methods to bond the class together.

i feel that race is the real theme of this movie. they experienced pain of losing lifes and friends and those close to them. and when they see other people doing it, they have a grudge on that particluar race.

I simply love this movie "Freedom Writers" . After watching this movie , I know why the race is important to the students at Wilson High School.

This tells us why race is important . without racial harmony , I guess in all coutries , there will be no peace at all .

I really like this movie very much (:

1) Race is important to the students in Wilson High School as it symbolise to whom they belong to: the White or the Black. By this, they show others how proud they are, to be in their own race.

As in the show of 'Freedom Writers', we can see that the students associate within their own races.

2) The cause of the racial conflict is the students themselves. Their hatred towards other races were so deep that they end up fighting and killing each other. Hence, some of them, live in fear.

I'm done:D

Freedom Writers was Great. It was boring at the first part but through the ending it was exciting and touching. To me,racism should not have existed in this world as it will cause war and also will have many lives at stake, but in all,im so glad that Singapore is an united country with no racist people.

Races is important because even though they country can have more malay then chinese or the other way round , there will not have any conflicts going on, or fights. As long as everyone gets the euqal rights , not based on their skin colour nor the mijority. They will be less conflicts .

Race is so important for the students as it's their sense of identity. They took proud in it till they had fights, riots, etc. This strongly shows that they they serious if it has to do with their race.

The cause might be the people themselves. They took it too seriously and negatively. Thus, the racial conflicts derived from themselves. Due to these conflicts and all, it had caused the students to hate among themselves. Even they are of the same class. They neither talk or work together well.

Race is important to the students at Wilson High as it gives them a sense of identity.

The cause of this conflict was due to the students having to witness violence at a very young age. Shooting amongst the blacks and whites. And being captured eventhough innocent by the other race, like Eva's father.

The students had to live in fear and resort to violence in order to defend themselves or their own race, which resulted in some deaths.

Since young, the students at
Wilson High had witnessed the people of other races killing / torturing their close ones. Race is important to them because they believe that people that are not of the same race as them would harm them, so they're unable to trust people, other than those of their own races.

Race is so important for the students at Wilson High School because for them, other races mean ENEMY,the one who they don't like to see in their life.So the better way of not seeing them again is to have riot or even kill them.

Some of the causes of the racial conflict in the school was that they sit with their own races in class and they don't hang out with others.Sometimes, they might even fight during lesson. This impact the students with their studies, and also their life!
